Visit Ready.gov for information on how to prepare for emergencies Emergency Preparedness Tips (courtesy of Franklin County Risk Management) Utility Outage: It is not uncommon for a utility outage or failure to cause a short term disruption to homes and businesses. However, in the long term situation, planning and preparation is necessary. From a preparedness perspective, power outage can affect lighting, HVAC systems, hot water, cooking appliances, refrigeration, and water supply (if you are on an electric pump), along with other daily living needs. Back up sources are important should the interruption last for more than a few hours. What alternatives do you have in place? Camping equipment may come in handy in a pinch. Hazardous Material Spill: Hazardous material sill or biological agent - Thousands of types of hazardous materials are shipped daily across the Commonwealth. The chances of being affected by an accident involving a hazardous material carrier becomes greater with the continued growth of industry and demand for fuel and chemicals. Terroristic threats of chemical warfare are on the rise, as well. Guidelines for these situations are similar due to the airborne exposure. Close all outside doors and windows; keep calm, do not panic or alarm anyone; do not go outdoors, unless authorized to do so; doors should be monitored to prevent use; and HVAC systems should be shut down to eliminate fresh air intake to the building. Home Preparedness: It is recommended that we keep a minimum three day supply of daily living needs on hand for each member of the household. The supplies should include such things as medications, personal hygiene items, food, water, back-up heating & cooking sources, toolkit, first aid kit, cleaning items, pet items, can opener, flashlight, extra batteries, battery powered radio. Emergency supplies in the vehicle are helpful too...include things such as jumper cables, flashlight, first aid kit, blanket, change of clothing, umbrella or rain gear. Hurricanes: Hurricanes can cause severe damage by the combined effects of gale force winds and torrential rains. The flooding and other effects of a tropical storm can be experienced hundreds of miles inland even after the storm has decreased in intensity or has moved beyond the coast. Hurricane watch means that a hurricane may threaten an area within 24 hours. Hurricane warning means the hurricane is expected to strike an area within 24 hours. Under the watch conditions, begin preparations to secure outside furniture and equipment, check emergency supplies, check alternative power, and confirm relocation plans if necessary. After the storm passes, avoid use of lanterns, matches, etc. until it has been determined there are no leaking gas lines or other flammable materials present. Beware of outdoor hazards such as loose debris, damaged power lines, snakes, washed out roads and bridges. Tornadoes: Tornadoes are local storms with whirling winds of tremendous speeds that can exceed several hundred miles per hour. These generally small and short lived storms are the most violent of all atmospheric phenomena. Tornado watch means that weather conditions are such that a tornado may develop. During a watch, close windows, doors, vents and openings to the building. Store outdoor furniture and equipment that could be picked up by the wind. Clear window sills and areas around windows. Tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted and protective measures should be taken immediately. During a warning, move to an area without windows, positioning yourself along the wall on the opposite side of the room from which the storm is approaching. Take position for greatest safety by crouching on knees, head down with hands locked at back of neck. Thunderstorms: Thunderstorms occur frequently in Franklin County. They are often accompanies by lightening, damaging winds and hail. Under certain climatic conditions, thunderstorms can be a prelude to a tornado. it is not uncommon for us to experience power outage as a result of a storm. Thunderstorm watch indicates there is a potential for a storm. Thunderstorm warning indicates that a severe thunderstorm has developed and will probably affect those in the indicated area. When possible, move indoors. During high winds, stay back from glass areas as much as possible. Threatening Behavior: Listen to your instincts. Threatening or dangerous behavior may include displaying signs of extreme stress, resentment, hostility, or anger: making threatening remarks; harassing or threatening phone calls. Do your best to remain calm, make eye contact, and talk with the individual. Call 911 when safe to do so without jeopardizing yourself or others. Cooperate and follow instructions given, until authorities are able to assist. Gas Odor: The potential for a natural or propane gas leak is very real. Be familiar with the scent of gas. If gas odor is detected, do NOT activate or shut off any electrical devices (ie. lights, computers, telephones, etc.) and do NOT use any other device which may cause spark. Shut off gas supply when safe to do so. Evacuate and call 911.

Internal Disasters: Internal disasters are unexpected situations that impose potential danger within the home or facility. Some of these include fire/smoke, explosion, strange/unknown odor, or dangerous/threatening behavior. Be familiar with evacuation plans, location of fire extinguishers, exits, and fire alarm pull stations. Help those requiring assistance. If you don’t have a plan, take time to meet with your Family or Team to discuss available options should something occur. Informal planning is better than no planning. More and more people are making their homes in woodland settings, rural areas, or remote mountain sites. There, residents enjoy the beauty of the environment but face the very real danger of wild fire. Wildfires often begin unnoticed. They can be ignited by the careless tossing of a cigarette, an unattended campfire or from natural causes like lightning. They spread quickly igniting brush, trees, and homes. Each year fire burns millions of acres of woodland across the United States. We can better live with the land by learning about the natural areas we inhabit and what we can do to reduce the risk of loss if wildfire occurs. Homes that survive almost always do so because their owners had prepared for the eventuality of fire. In a wild-fire, every second counts! |
